What's EUDR and FSC certificate ?

FSC Certificate:
The Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) is a globally recognized, non-profit organization that sets the gold standard for responsible forest management. Established in 1993, its mission is to promote environmentally appropriate, socially beneficial, and economically viable management of the world's forests.
An FSC certificate comes in several forms, but the most relevant for end-users are:
FSC Forest Management (FM): Awarded to forest owners and managers who meet the rigorous FSC principles and criteria for sustainable forestry.
FSC Chain of Custody (CoC): This is the certification that paper manufacturers, converters, and traders obtain. It tracks FSC-certified material from the forest through the supply chain to the final product, ensuring its integrity. When you see an FSC label on a ream of paper or a cardboard box, it guarantees the wood fiber originates from responsibly managed sources.

In practical application: When a publisher prints a book on FSC-certified paper, a brand uses FSC-certified packaging, or an office buys FSC-certified copier paper, they are directly supporting forest conservation, biodiversity protection, and the rights of workers and local communities.

What is the EUDR?
The EU Deforestation Regulation (EUDR) is a groundbreaking piece of mandatory legislation enacted by the European Union. It came into force in June 2023 and will apply to operators from December 2024. Unlike FSC, which is a voluntary certification, the EUDR is a legal requirement for selling specific commodities, including wood and paper, in the EU market.
The EUDR's core objective is to minimize the EU's contribution to global deforestation and forest degradation. It requires companies to conduct strict due diligence.
Key obligations under the EUDR for paper products include:
Deforestation-Free Verification: Companies must ensure that their products (and the materials used to make them) were produced on land that has not been subject to deforestation after December 31, 2020.
Legality Compliance: The production must comply with the relevant laws of the country of production.
Due Diligence System: Operators must implement a system to collect precise geolocation data of the farmland or forest plots where the raw materials were sourced, assess and mitigate risks, and report on their compliance.
In practical application: An exporter shipping paper pulp or packaging boxes to Germany must now provide precise evidence—often geolocation coordinates—proving the wood did not come from a recently deforested area. Failure to comply can result in hefty fines and product confiscation.
